The DNS (Domain Name System) is a naming system for websites.  It maps a site’s domain name to its IP address.

After typing a domain name in the web browser, a DNS (Domain Name System) query reveals the site’s IP address to the browser so it can fetch the appropriate web data.

DNS is the database that holds the information on domain names and their IP address. It is like a phonebook where the domain name is the name, and the IP Address is the phone number. Nameservers are the part of the DNS that translate the domain name to the IP address.

Web browsers use the DNS to find IP address for URLs.
